One of the best restaurants we had the pleasure of visiting on our French Motorhome holiday in 2010 was La Halte Nautique at Gigny-sur-Saône, the food was simple and excellent, the view was magnificent and we just idled away an afternoon in an idyllic location next to the River Saône. The River Saône itself is very beautiful with an abundance of wildlife and it’s extremely wide with huge boats that sail up and down between Paris and Marseilles.

We were staying at Château L’Eperviere in Burgundy, one of our favourite campsites and from there it is either a 10/15 minute stroll or a 5 minute bike ride to La Halte Nautique. It’s literally left out of the campsite, left again, down to the river and left again to the restaurant. Just ask at reception or pick up a local map for directions to the river.

The owners of the restaurant actually live on a boat moored on the river, apparently it’s safer in the winter because when the river rises it floods the surrounding land and that’s why when you do see it you’ll notice it’s built on a hill – sound French logic.

You can have a snack anytime of the day and they cater for all needs whether that be ice cream, coffee, glass of wine or a three course meal. We had a gorgeous home made lasagne washed down with some Macon Rose followed by home made pecan tart.

We sat outside being entertained by what was going on in the river and gloried in the sun on a beautiful June day – it seems so long ago now.

There’s nothing better when you’re away in the Motorhome in the summer than having a barbecue on site, it just seems to go so well with the whole theme of making the most of the summer nights, rather than cooking in the Motorhome itself.

This is my first post on this subject but it is a very important part of Motorhoming so I probably should have covered it before now. It’s great to sit outside the Motorhome on a summer night cooking, having a glass of wine and then eating outdoors, it just makes the nights last longer.

We have a Weber portable gas barbecue with a lid and it works really well, the lid does make a difference to the cooking times by the way so I would recommend one. For those of you that think otherwise I’d like to assure you that cooking with a gas barbecue tastes just as good as cooking with charcoal but it’s much quicker and much cleaner.

There is a very simple recipe that we have that tastes really good so I thought I’d let you in on the secret so that you can try it for yourself.

Chicken with Teriyaki

We use a couple of good sized boned skinless chicken breasts, cut them up into manageable pieces, put them into a plastic bag and then pour enough Teriyaki marinade into the bag to coat them all – be generous with the marinade, the more the better. We do this in the morning and then place them back into the fridge for the day taking them out a couple of hours prior to the barbecue.

We also prepare some Mediterranean vegetables such as peppers, aubergines, courgettes to cook on the barbecue at the same time. We usually cut these in long strips because they’re easier to cook on the barbecue, oh and throw on some whole mushrooms. If we need any rice to go with it then we use the packet rice that you fry in a pan for a couple of minutes, but that’s the only thing we cook in the Motorhome.

Ok, so far so good, now for the cooking. Heat up the barbecue, put some olive oil on the vegetables, take the chicken pieces out of the bag and place everything on the barbecue, close the lid, give it 10 minutes and then turn everything over and cook for another 10 minutes and you’re done. The cooking times by the way are dependant on your barbecue, whether it has a lid and the heat level you use.

The results are fantastic and the chicken tastes excellent and is always tender. Try it please, you won’t be disappointed.

The marinade we use is pictured below and you can buy it from Morrisons and maybe Sainsbury’s but I haven’t seen it in my local Tesco’s.
