Towards the end of January we visited the Caravan Club site at Moreton-in-Marsh in the Cotswolds for a very enjoyable mid week stopover. Only half the site was open which was fair enough given the amount of people that were staying there. Moreton is in fact a site with two halves, you can either go to the left or to the right and either side is as good as the other; see map.
The right hand side has a brand new toilet block along with a veg prep building, launderette, Motorhome service point etc and the left has the same although the toilet bock is slightly older but still very good.
The site is open all year and you do not have to be a member to stay there. The site has exceptional facilities such as;
- 21 acres ( this means nothing to me – the site is very large and spacious )
- 182 pitches with 172 hardstanding
- 2 fully fitted and heated toilet blocks
- Veg prep areas
- 2 Motorhome service points
- Play area for the kids including crazy golf, boules, play frame, 5 a side football pitch
- WiFi internet access
- Dog walk
- Information hut
On top of that Moreton-in-Marsh town centre is a 5 minute footpath walk and is a very attractive Cotswold town with a number of shops including a large Budgens and a large Tuesday street market. There are also over 20 pubs, restaurants and cafes to try.
Ideally for Motorhome owners there are a number of buses that leave from the town centre and you can get all the details of these from the Tourist Information Centre. You can visit Stow, Bourton on the Water, Evesham, Cirencester and Stratford to name a few.
I thoroughly recommend a visit to Batsford Arboretum which is one of the jewels of the Cotswolds and one of the largest private collections of trees and shrubs in the country. The great thing about Batsford Arboretum is that you can go in either Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter and see something different in each season. The highlight for me though is the Autumn when the Japanese Acers are a beautiful red colour, it’s all quite magical. To get there you can either walk ( 30 – 45 minutes ), catch a bus that drops you off at the top of the driveway from where you have a 10 minute walk or you can take your Motorhome because there is a large Motorhome friendly car park. There is also a garden centre where you can purchase plants from the grounds including Ferns and Acers and where you can get a very good lunch or snack. A Falconry is just next door but we have never been to that so I’m not able to recommend it.
Another very good place to visit is a garden called Mill Dene that is in a village called Blockley that you can get to on bus from Moreton. Mill Dene is a very well laid out private garden and it will take about 2 hours to do it justice. There is a nice conservatory self service restaurant that works very well.
Another great place to visit is Sezincote which is around a 30-45 minute walk or you can get off a bus at the Batsford driveway and walk, the gate is on the opposite side of the road. I’ve covered Sezincote in a previous post so please have a look.
When we went to Batsford our ticket gave us half price entrance to Mill Dene or something like that, you need to keep an eye out for the offers either at the site or at the tourist information office.
