We did things a little differently for this trip in that we decided to take an early morning Eurotunnel to arrive in Calais at around 4am French time. We wanted to do this so that we could get a good run down to L’Eperviere with as little traffic as possible and it worked a treat. L’Eperviere is 411 miles from Calais and we arrived there at mid afternoon after a very simple drive down and a good sleep on the way.
Domaine du Chateau de L’Eperviere is an excellent campsite north of Macon that we’ve used a number of times both as a stopover on route to the south of France, or back to Calais and as a short stay although it would certainly be good for a longer stay in order to see some of the surrounding towns and villages. The site is situated at Gigny sur Saone within easy walking distance of the River Soane, a very wide river that flows down to Lyon. The river is a very good place for a picnic and apart from the boats, birds and occasional splash from a fish there is a bar that serves some good lunches and, of course, local vino.
The site itself has everything you would need including a shop, outdoor and indoor pool, restaurant, pizzeria, take away and bar – the food by the way is excellent. You can hire bikes, visit the onsite wine cellar that has local wine tasting a couple of nights a week and even fish in one of the site lakes. The site is well laid out and has 2 sanitary blocks and a motorhome service point and has also plenty of taps and drainage scattered around. The reception has lots and lots of information about the local area and the staff are extremely friendly and speak very good English.
Chateau L’Eperviere is a very good site and we would highly recommend it for a stopover/short stay.
