Broadway – the ‘Jewel of the Cotswolds’

Broadway Caravan Club SiteWe have just had another splendid weekend in Broadway referred to as the ‘Jewel of the Cotswolds’. It is a place we never tire of visiting as it has plenty to occupy us. Whether it is just meandering down the pretty High Street admiring the honey coloured houses and cottages, shopping in unique shops and boutiques or donning the walking boots and venturing a little further.

As it was a fine day (not raining cats and dogs) we took a walk down the High Street to Upper High Street and picked up the Cotswold Way trail to the Broadway Tower Country Park. Pear Tree House is on the corner of this path. Follow the way-mark posts and it will lead you directly to the Tower. The going is quite steep in parts with some steps but there are a couple of benches on route to rest and soak up the views. We encountered people of all ages on this walk and varying degrees of footwear. It is a lovely spot for a picnic whilst watching the deer in an enclosure.

The Tower was open so a climb to the top was a must, to see the extensive views of the compass points. There is also an exhibition of the history of Broadway and the Tower on three floors and a small shop on the ground floor. There is a small entrance fee but well worth paying.

The Earl of Coventry built Broadway Tower in 1798 on the spot where Beacon fires were lit and it stands 1,031 feet above sea level. William Morris amongst others lived in the Tower.

The Cotswold Way runs down the High Street and is a good base for walks to places such as Chipping Campden, Snowshill Village and Manor, Stanton and Buckland to name but a few.

In Broadway itself here are several public houses serving food and hotel/restaurants, tea rooms and Sheikh’s Bangladeshi Restaurant/take away which is absolutely delicious.  The Tourist Information is situated opposite Budgens supermarket in Russell Square.

We stayed at the excellent Broadway Caravan Club site in Station Road which is approximately a steady twenty minute walk into the centre of Broadway.
